Title A name given to the resource Bagdon Farm Description An account of the resource Lithuanian immigrant Joseph Bagdon (Bagdonas) arrived in Sunderland in June of 1908. Around 1915 he was living at the former Cephas Graves house (built 1873). The barn at the rear of the property burned sometime during the 1970s. View is looking North West from present day route 116, South of the rest stop. In a 2023 corespondense with the Swampfield Historical Society long time Sunderland resident Tom Zimnowski offered this story of the barn fire: "I remember that night the barn and cattle were destroyed. I was on my way home from 7th Street Turners Falls, Saint Kazimiers dancing till 1am. I hit a Skunk on 5&10. I was at the Sunderland Car Wash about 1:30am washing my Firebird when Ralph Pomeroy pulled up and questioned me WHY? It was then I found out about the fire. He was looking for the Arsonist. I explained but the smell convinced him! It was not me. Then again I was wearing my White slacks and Red shirt and dancing shoes." Title A name given to the resource Wallpaper From The Williams Tavern Description An account of the resource The Williams Tavern on North Main street, West side was open to the public from 1781 thru 1824. The pine wall boards shown here likely date back to 1719 when the house was built. Later, sometime between 1786 and 1800 this block printed wall paper was hung in the Inn. The process of block printing is achieved by carving the desired pattern on wooden blocks. A worker then picks up the desired color from a paint pallet by pressing the block on to it. Next the block is pressed to the paper that has been painted in a ground color, in this case Grey leaving behind the printed pattern. Every time another color is added a separate block must be carved. Four were used to create this paper, which was made by Appleton Prentiss Paper Works of Milk Street, Boston MA. This Arch and Pillar pattern was their most expensive paper selling at 3 Shillings per roll. Its design features include repeating arches and pillars with figures dressed in classical garments, shields with flags, and "Putti" (naked children) seated on the arch signifying the ever presence of God. The pattern is derived from an English paper. There are seven known surviving examples of this pattern: the 1767 Oliver-Gerry-Lowell house in Cambridge MA., the 1798 Oliver Wright House Sturbridge, MA, the Gilman Garrison House Exeter NH, the 1799 Broad Oak farm in Hanover MA, and the 1786 Stephen Robbins House in East Lexington MA. There is also an example in Pennsylvania. Known ground colors are two shades of Grey, Pink, Dark Blue and Yellow. The Williams Tavern was taken down in 1960 and these boards were recovered and stored on site for 62 years (as of 2022). Patrons of the Inn would have seen this paper. It is the earliest known example of a Sunderland interior. The first image shows the layout and repeat of the pattern. The second image shows the 2 1/2" wide swag borders that were hung below the ceiling and around doors and windows. Description An account of the resource This image is a 1916 view looking West across North Main Street with Sugar Loaf on the distant left and North Sugarloaf on the right. The farm on the right served as the Oliver Williams Tavern from 1781 thru 1824. The original house was built in 1718, had later additions added and was taken down during the early 1960's along with all of the out buildings. The house on the middle was built in 1718 and is the earliest extant house in Sunderland (October 2021). The house was used during the early 20th century to house workers for the Williams family farm. The second image is of the tavern in December of 1916. The third image is a view from the South in 1916. The fourth image is members of the Williams family on a two horse carriage and the fifth image in their "Metz" car. The sixth image is the tavern sign.
